ive heard good things about nissan cabstars. it depends on what size you need. i need 4x4 alot where i work so i run an L200 tipper but fancy a 130 landrover next.

i drive an ldv....depending what model you get they have the same running gear as a transit, so between those 2 i'd go ldv, you'll get a whole lot more for your money.

definetly be worth looking at an isuzu or mitsubishi canter though, they seem reasonably cheap second hand

convoy, 98 plate

i think 98 onwards has transite enginge and gearbox, make sure before you buy!

for 4000 you oughta be able to pick up something pretty decent. i paid 3400 for mine 2 years ago and it only had 50,000 on the clock.

I'v just bought a 2000 transit tipper, ex council, one owner from new, 34000 miles on the clock, for £5k +vat.

Before that i bought a cabstar, 2001, with 67,000 on the clock which fell apart on the first job! I took it back and with some gentle persuasion the dealer exchanged it for the transit.

I'v always been happy with the ldvs, the best one we had was a peugeot engine, 2.5td, went like the clappers and towed 2 or 3 tonnes quite happily! Bit thirsty though.

I wouldnt bother with a cabstar at £4k, i think your best bet is a ldv convoy with transit engine. You can tell its a transit engine as soon as you turn the key......

you dont get as much chip in them as you would think though!! none the less there still not a bad truck!

If your staying legal, you will get as much chip on a 130 as you will a tranny tipper. You won't find one under 5k though!

I would also recommend a Tranny engined LDV for that price.

Apart from the new 2.4 duratorque engine, the transits used the same 2.5 peugeot engine. The LDV uses a lower ratio in the back axle though, meaning a lower top speed but better pulling power. 410 merc is also a good alternative. With a budget of 4k, LDV would be my choice.

You can get more chip on a cabstar with a decent sized chip body than you can on a transit while staying within the confines of the vehicles legal weight limit.
