He is dictating the terms, you are working with contracts of the mind.

have you secured the future work in writing?

He could of written the cheque and put 3 days onto the date.

he is simply not prioritising you, this is not a valued custmer.

I predict you are going to be keeping this thread going in the future, maybe not with just this customer but unless you change your ways you will be needing this to vent.

I would be interested to hear how you would tackle this situation Steve, I respect your views on these type of situations and think I could learn from you. Please tell.

Pedroski, read what Mr Blair has written and follow the advise. You could go back through the archives of Arbtalk and read about the stages Stevies's business has gone through and the fact that at one point he decided to rationalise his customer list and bin all the bad/slow payers and you could tell the stress levels dropped massively.

Try supplying tescos......6 months payment terms. Then they decide to only give you half the money because in that artic load of caully they found one slightly damaged head....or they decide that they wil only pay mince prices for best fillet, as they are mincing it- never mind that they never mentioned this when they took delivery etc etc .......

"6 months" Who in there right mind would bank roll a large suppermarket for 6 months !

It's the same business plan as bank rolling someones holiday for a week.

the customer is not to blame here , the contractor is .

He is only negotiating, nothing wrong with that.

the best way to deal with anything is speak from the heart first and foremost, that way the cards are on the table .

after that it can go various ways, thus customer would go in my category of ' chancer ' totally harmless, just the guy who wants it all his way, he is not going to just roll over, he will want something to believe he is still winning.

This guy is all about money, nothing else!

now if he has got the brass neck to get a weeks interest free credit.

first it's holiday, then Christmas, oh no guess what, end of the month credit card bill blah Bla blah.

Be direct , forget it's going to end nasty and basically man up and take control of your life and business.

you are not alone mate, this is how most guys run their tree business, convincing yourself of diferent reasons why it is ok for you to wait is a defense mechanism you learned as a kid so you didn't get your feeling hurt.
