Apple wood needed

Hi

 

I've been contacted by someone looking for some apple:

 

"Hi there

 

I am from a windmill in Derbyshire, run by a Charity, and we are seeking some pieces of seasoned apple wood to make cogs for one of our gears.

 

We need to obtain sufficent to make about 15 cogs each made from approx 6 1/2" long x 5" wide x 2" thick timber , as blanks , from which the cogs will be carved. Of course longer pieces we could cut would be acceptable ! One of our members can make the cogs."

 

Any ideas anyone?

There's an AT member in Peterborough that may have access to some, I can remember him posting he can get loads of it for firewood.

I just can't remember his username.

I'm baffled by the dimensions....?

Surely a cog will have a diameter & thickness....?

I cut some windblown the other day, probably have enough but it's not seasoned & no idea how they'd get it there.....

its me i can get loads of apple wood the wood this in the wisbech area though and derby ars around 9o+ miles mark from me

thats ok like i sais i can get loads at least 25ton easy how cheep i can have it for is unreal but like i siad i dont curently have and in my yard but could have it when needed and dave fox do have apple to and he is in the long sutton area wich its aroug 12 miles from where the my yard is yh the wisbech area have 100's acers of fruit farm in the area

I thought that elm was the traditional wood for cogs etc in windmills.

Very hard wearing and lasts for decades. Thats what we use up our way in Fife anyway.

Apple is used for the cog teeth on a windmill, not for the body of the cog. It is a dense wood with good resistance to wear in this kind of scenario.
