i'm contract climbing for a company in south wales and got back to yard to day and the boss wanted a word with a few of us abot a job in Reading. He want's a few of us to go to Reading to start a big job for him, basicly im going to be leaving home at 6 and the boss want's to stay on site till it gets dark. so that means i wont get back home till gone 7 at night. I don't mind doing this at all, but do you guys think it would be unfair if i put on an extra money on my day rate for this time i'm going to be working in reading? how much more a day do i charge him for this time i will be working away? regards western:001_smile:

I think you ned to talk to your employer about this. You cant just land him with a bigger bill without at least mentioning it to him before you go to reading. I would expect to pay extra to a subby for doing this. Are you gonna be taken to the job or hve to get there under your own steam? Obviously he would be (IMO) obliged to pay all or some of any extra costs incurred by the journey, but TBH you arent really talking about mega extra hours there. IMO 6 am start in wales and 7pm finish there too isnt the end of the world, if you had to be at reading from SW at 6am and be there until 7pm with the journey on top of that, that would be a different matter.

Agree, you need to speak with the boss.

Have a quite word with him and see what he says, you don't want to loose work in the future but you don't want to be taken advantage of. Some bosses take the mick and work staff to the bone for no xtra or a poor day rate, some boss's look after their workers. Which one is he?

What's a normal day, time wise? I don't think it's naughty to ask for more maybe even at an hourly rate of time and a half?

Hiya Deer man, the normal day is 8 at the yard and at the end of the day 4.30 finish, i get back about 4.15 to take chipper of and put kit in the lock up. i think time and a half would be fair. regards western:biggrin:

In that case, he won't mind paying for every hour you put in on his behalf :001_smile:

funny how first impressions last

He probably was trying to convey that he expected you to work hard for your (good) money

A bit clumsy but you still remember the comment!!

If he's paid you before for the extra travelling then no reason to think he won't this time though I would definately ask -before- you start in Reading- Don't think ' I'll start working there then ask for more so he's over a barrel
