I asked the HMRC this a long time ago and even with external taps that could not be controlled from the cabin whilst driving along then no. HSE said very unhappy about often draining tanks on work sites. I was told in a verbal fashion from HMRC office that a removable tank/drum on the back with pipes to use when on private sites is allowed but not common knowledge and must have connections removed again before going back onto public roads. (like 20ltrs UN approved)

It’s not really news, the rules were clarified in 2007

 

You can run your tractor or mog to site and use red but what you can’t do is carry a load other than implements and tools to be used by or with the vehicle on the public highway.

 

So no carting timber, chip or suchlike on the highway.

Yes I've heard a removable tank is OK for work on private land.

unless it was from a farm, estate or roadside job...

Unless from Agricultural/Forestry use and the NFU insure one to do this then that is legal.

 

NFU insurance document does allow haulage on red diesel from farms and forests with own produce back to base.

 

Its got nothing to do with the NFU, they don't write the law.
