this is nearly as bad as the customer that rings up to say how much to chop my tree down?

Anywhere from £10 per hour for 1 man with saw and trailer to a few hundred for a big crew with mog/crane/god know what other kit.

Price the job based on the tree. What takes you three days could take someone else 2 hours

a customer should expect to pay what you ask for the job, not per hour. As has been said, there is too many variables to give an hourly rate to a customer. Price the job as is, if it takes you 1 hour or 10 hours it doesnt matter as long as its priced correctly.

exactly... when they ask the question and i tell em that then there more than happy to be quoted on the job....

Not too long ago I had a chap call me from Redon which is an hours drive away.

"I got a tree that needs felling, I'll clear up all the wood, I got a saw and its a 10min job, how much?"

I replied, 150euros, its a mornings work for me regardless.

Last I heard, this chap found a farmer in the local to do it for 50euros.

Good I say, thats just what the job was worth locally.

If some-one who lived in Bath called a London plumber to change a washer then I imagine the bill would reflect the travel and minimum charge more than the value of the work done.

I try to never charge less than a mornings work but I use my discretion (old biddy with 1 branch or pretty single mother with...)

£350 an hour is what i say when asked... thats for a climber and one groundsman..

Hang on before I get my knickers in a twist; £350 for one hour equates to £2800 per day for 2 men and no plant / chipper mentioned?

Please clarify this i.e you say an hour because the grief for one hours actual work takes a lot longer or what?

If I take that literally, that is exactly 10 times what we around west devon charge for 8-10 hours for 2-3 men, chipper / waste disposal etc.
