Cot, the answer to your question would be both, in a perfect situation. I would suggest going to your supplier and try on the various kit you are interested in and make sure the dealer has a clear knowledge of their product line. Next step would be to ask for at least 3 customers that use the type of gear your interested in and arrange a demo with them to better advise you on the product line. More times than not this will not be an issue for the dealer to provide you with this information. The Key is to be an informed consumer since this is an "investment" for your future source of income. I believe if you follow this simple suggestion you will be more confident with your purchasing decision and there will be less stress over the whole matter, let us know how you made out.

All the best.

If im honest i dont relly go out and buy kit if im not sure how to use it of what it does .

if im looking into a new piece of kit tht is new on the market i will look into the piece of kit by speaking to - Arbtalk, suppliers and other climbers that have used the kit .and if possible i will try the piece of kit out before i buy it .

it can save alot of money if you try it and dont get on with it or find that its not what you were expecting

Most of the time i just buy through companies website so I don’t get to try the kit or speak to a assistant.

Does anyone know if you are covered by insurance if you don’t get any training or shown how to use the equipment by the supplier?

I believe like anything else if you use something and your not trained correctly in it use you are going to be held responsible. I believe what you are interested in purchasing is an item that you must buy in person. Not everything can be purchased on line and this I believe would be top on the list. This week I spent the last 3 days in Hartford, CT. USA showing and allowing my customers to try on and use my lifting harness and it really made a difference when it came time for their purchasing decision. I was one of about 100 venders at the TCIA trade show and there were many venders there with climbing harnesses and the like answering all questions and allowing the customer to try on and use said climbing belt's on the spot so as to compare and decide. This IMO is the best way to be an informed buyer and this can not be done on line. You can see some of the pictures I took from the show and posted on my thread about the TCIA show. You may find them interesting.

in most cases it is emplied within the instructions that this equipment must only be used by "trained and competent persons" in the event of a claim against the seller or manufacturer i would guess that the case would not stand up in court .

This is only my thought on the matter though .

So as apbell says- what have you broke ????
