what would you say the best tree identification book is? yes im after one...

You will never have just the one. They're addictive

Do you want a field guide or a multi volume coffee table book? Photographic or just text? History and uses or solely botany? Only the more frequently encountered species or all species?

And the biggee - how much do you want to spend?

I nearly posted this the other day. For me I want photographs (leaf/needle illustration, tree form/natural shape) where it's typically found and what it's used for.

Something I can turn to to put a name to a face really, but field guide not coffee table size :)

Best one for price, what you are asking for and ease of use is the collins field guide by Owen johnson (2006)

But as janey states, you will end up buying them ALLLLLLL...!!

(Collin's) Trees of great Britain and northern Europe

x 2. Although the key takes a little getting used to as the trees are arranged by leaf shape.

Cassell's - Trees of Great Britain and Northern Ireland compliments any guide as the description reinforces your field notes and the Collins guide. Along with that of course you have a plethora of other books like the Guide to Conifers of the British Isles...oh and it goes on and on. Like Janey says - you collect lots and they are all as good as each other!
