We had the same engine put onto one of our old Howard Gems - brand new Kohler Magnum and it back fires everytime you drop the throttle back quickly. I wasn't that concerned, just need to go easy when we throttle off

i stripped it down to have a look see and when i lifted the head i turned it over and the exhaust valve lifts twice per two strokes once a fraction when the inlet valve is open and then it opens fully on the next stroke i think this is why it backfires so i dug into it further and there is part of the governor hitting of the bottom of the exhaust lifter does any body have any info on these engines
