exactly damn pikeys LOL,ive never heard any thing good about them ,completely off topic but i dont think you can corpratise tree work, the best gangs ive seen are usually smallish well led, motivated and trained companies who are passionate about there work...not ones who will take on any body and dont have a bloody clue what they are doing from one day to the next,my mate said he used to sit in the truck laughing hysterically at the cocks ups and decisions made..

Would'nt it be good if there was a mark, membership or certificate that we could have, like CORGI.

If so what form do you thinhk would be best?

Would you certify the company or the individual?

How would it be made useful to both small and large companies?

All we need is something which reduces the number of Pikeys and cowboys out there. They are seriously driving down prices. Because tree work is so expensive to get in to, ie equipment costs insurance etc our profits are low when compared with a plumber or sparky who only have to shell out a fraction on tools and equipment compared to what we do. Get rid of the pikeys and we'll all be minted!

I believe paying for nptcs should be enough.....to be honest i really dont want to line some one elses pockets with the money let alone the time it takes to become an AA aproved contractor.

How many approved contractors is there in the borders tom?colin white springs to mind but im sure most of his work is down to reputation maybe only a small percent is becouse hes an approved contractor .....I could be very wrong though!

Its Chris White I think, you're right theres only 5 AAAC's in Scotland and I'm not saying we should all join.

Thing is though Imagine you're a punter and you dony know much about trees, how do you choose between a well meaning well motivated quality team and a cowboy. All it comes down to is the gift of the gab, and if the cowboy's got it he'll get the job.

What if you could only call yourself a tree surgeon if you had certain qualifications? What should these be?

guys....i dont think its beneficial for the site to be mentioning other companies names in a deragatory manner, its not what i intended the site for and im sure none of us would be happy if it was us being duscussed....please remember this is a public forum.

matty, you are right though, i think its hard to become a large tree company and maintain the same standards you could expect from a 2 man operation.

Some people have mentioned pushing the AAAC scheme forward more.

I think there is a public relations problem with it in that it seems to have a mystique about it that makes it seem inaccessable to most tree companies. Scotland's arborists have rejected the scheme wholesale apart from a few diehards. There are many great tree care companies in Scotland with people dedicated to improving tree care who do not have the AAAC status and instead thrive of word of mouth and low scale local advertising.

I would rather see the ISA's Certified Arborist scheme promoted more pro-actively in the UK. Its far less complicated than the AAAC and could be made very accessable to all company owners and their employess if the ISA got their act together and promoted this Certification more pro-actively.

I think large companys can hold a very good reputaion as the one ive mentioned but corpraritsing tree gangs seeems to have a negative effect from the ones ive seen, please feel free to delete names or posts steve!
