Could anyone please give me the weight of a green split metre cube? Hardwood and softwood if poss and what percentage air is there in a split cubic metre.

 

Just trying to work out how many tonnes i've done so far and how many more to go!

how long is a ball of string - it varies with species as well - the link will give you density although in some cases in lb/cu ft so you will need to convert.

 

%age of air will vary according to the size you split the logs down to I think - the more even they are the better they will stow.

 

The only easy way you will get a worthwhile answer is to fill a known volume - either bag or trailer - and take it over a weighbridge. The weight of the timber in the trailer and the density quoted in the table will tell you how much timber is in the container and the rest is air - I would guestimate at 50%.

 

There are a couple of other experiments you could do but probably more time and trouble than they are worth.

Yes i thought 50%. Just get fed up with people locally bragging how many tonnes they do in a year! I don't work in tonnes just cubes whether split or cord just was trying to compare what i'm shifting to the boys buying it in.

Just continue making your pile, measure dimensions of the pile (easiest if you can bung it in a bay or something that will support it as a 3D rectangle (????????????????? I need to know this word!!!). Then just measure the sides, calculate the volume and proclaim you have Xm3 loose in the bay. You'll never get the exact volume minus air spaces without wasting time that would be better off spent splitting more wood or drinking tea.

Who cares what they claim to do in a year? Just worry about how many cubes you have available to sell.

A tonne of green hardwood makes 1.5 -1.6 cubic metres of loose logs but will be half as heavy when seasoned.

i woudnt worry about what other people are doing as long as the heap of wood you split makes you plenty of £££ and your happy
