It looks as though one side of the piston has fractured causing the issue - was this an OEM part or aftermarket?

not seen an original part implode like that before - not a nice one at all:thumbdown: Think even I would throw in the towel on that one:lol:

If the crankcase starts at £240, what will the final bill be for numerous trips to the dealer for parts? Time to cut 'n' run... and woefully have to buy a new saw.

It was an aftermarket big bore kit from one of the more reputable sellers. Sold with 12 months warranty.

I contacted the seller and emailed across a load of pictures of the aftermath. I got a response telling me they'd forwarded them to the manufacturers (which made me grumble, I purchased a warranted part from the seller, not the manufacturer! Give me at least the money from the P+C back)

Got another email this morning with the manufacturers request to send them what's left of the saw and if they reckon it was the kit at fault they might do better than just refund the p&c. "They are prepared to make some compensation for the saw being wrecked"

Wasn't expecting that to be honest. And even if they reckon it was user error or some such it's not going to be any worse than it is now.

I'll keep y'all updated.

Not being clever but that is why I always try to salvage the original cylinder and fit a decent quality piston, the piston isn't straight Aluminium but should contain silicon to reduce thermal expansion - something important in piston design!

Going back to your damage - make sure the remains of the piston have the gudgeon pin circlip in place both ends before you send it back - I think that one half of the piston shattered but it is also possible the circlip came out and the gudgeon pin caught on the transfer snapping the rod but less likely.

Hope you get something back toward a new saw:thumbup:

Not being clever indeed

I replaced p&c for the increased capacity, not because the original was broken. It's sitting on my shelf, looking a bit forlorn at its former home....

There's a big tear under the inlet so first thing u checked us all the air box and carb screws- all in place.

Next I checked the pin, both clips on place and no sign of it moving

No scores anywhere.

Plug a lovely coffee colour, slightly dark (as tuned a little rich to bed in)

Apart from the small end just shearing off for no apparent reason I could see no cause?

Right, ran the 090 contra through a log, revs kept dropping, will rip the muffler off in a bit to check that, check the plug, and the decomp valve, as I don't like this old design

What a bummer, the tear under the inlet sounds like the bevelling on the inlet port was poor and the piston skirt got snagged and had the effect of breaking the small end off the rod or debris got caught in it.

I have never heard of a 066 or 660 shear a small end - bend the crank on MS650s yes, but not the rod.

Nothing else really makes sense - some of these aftermarket pots have pretty loose pistons - the rings won't come in to contact with the lower part of the inlet port so if the piston skirt is unfinished and sharp and the port is badly bevelled.....

The other possibility is that the lower piston shattered and caused the damage!

Good luck with your claim!

I've just been offered the following:

I ship the wreck to Taiwan, postage paid by manufacturer.

They examine it.

If they find their manufacturing at fault I get paid £300 as a contribution to replace my broken machine.

If they find my installing/handling/whatever-ing at fault they pay me £150 for the wreck as I'm not allowed to take any parts other than bar and chain off. (Not even in-related parts)

Seems a sound deal to me?
