Hi Spud! Without looking through 200 pages I have a bit of an issue with my 2006 ms200, it runs beautiful once revved up but if you come off the gas it just idles for a few seconds then cuts out, them will restart first pull. All the time.

 

I've replaced carb with a recon job and put a new spark plug in it but I'm not amazingly mechanical and it's running just the same which makes me think its not carb at all?

 

Any ideas off top of your head?

Jon. At a stab on the dark I would go with air leesk, would need a leak down test to check it.

Dying when brake applied is normally worn clutch next time restart saw with brake off and see if it starts, is the saw flooding out?

No its not flooding at all. Its been a fantastic saw for the past year but the last few days its been bloody annoying

It may be a possible air leak as Rich says but an air leak usually has other symptoms such as bogging when the throttle is snapped open and holding on to revs if the throttle is closed fast - it also depends if it is leaking when the crankcase is under vacuum or pressure.

 

You may find that increasing the L screw to say 1 & 1/4 turn may help.

 

One thing it may be is low compression from a partial seize or carbon damage - you should really measure it to discount it - 150psi is reasonable compression on one of these saws and expect 170psi on a decent one.

Need to get it tested, comp test, carb clean test and check, check the clutch over. Do some fault finding, check the carb is all good and work from that. The cutting out with brake does imply clutch issue, apply clutch and rev saw, does it die or bog or does the chain run on?

When a saw is idling, a slight force or friction to the crank will stall an engine. On a chainsaw, when the chain brake is applied, it should allow the crank to turn freely but should lock up the cutting gear but not cause any friction or braking on the crankshaft.

 

Generally this sort of issue is a bad or dry needle bearing, twine wrapped round the crank end, broken clutch spring or dirt in the clutch drum.

 

The MS261 has a documented issue with the needle bearing/crank end and will not dwell on this but the above reasons should give you a good starting point to resolve your issues.
