Spud, My MS390 is running sweetly, it seems to have bedded in well now its idle is perfect and it revs sweetly. Annnd it doesnt dump oil all over the storage shelf! Thanks very much.

 

I am treating myself to a 346XP-G, just waiting for FR Jones to reopen and call me to take my money! Going to go for a 15inch bar, from what i read they struggle a bit with a 18inch? Have you tried an 18 on yours?

Glad the MS390 is working OK, the 346XP will probably pull a 18" bar but with a 15" it will dig in and keep going better, they need to be kept on the boil - 13" for smaller stuff or 15" for larger logging!

The dealers that do work on my saws, hedge cutters and mowers have said I should run all of my kit on Super unleaded not just normal unleaded. Something to do with the additives in normal unleaded are causing problems with carbs.

 

This is not just 2 stroke machines but 4 stroke also with the mowers what are your thoughts on this and will the carbs need adjusting.

Personally I use normal unleaded but am not cutting every day, typically every few weekends in the winter. It is very difficult to say if any of the carb problems I have seen have in anyway been caused by the cheaper fuel or not.

 

I have seen many problems been caused by hard use on old fuel mix and fuel line failure through fuel being left in the tank but that is about it.

 

Did they say what sort of problems the carbs are having?

I agree that unleaded (95ron) petrol causes problems, but IMO it is the LACK of additives, namely the anti-oxidants (preservatives) that cause the problems

These problems manifest themselves as solids and gels which form in the petrol by chemical oxidation as the fuel ages.

The solvents also cause problems with the rubber and plastic components.

As far as I know, 98ron will be no different in this respect.

The 98ron fuel burns more slowly than 95 so the engine will run cooler and starting will, in theory be a little more difficult. As far as I can see it will do no harm, but a small retune of variable jet carbs will be neccessary to achieve top performance.

A better option may be to consider an akylate fuel such as Aspen or Moto-mix.

I personally have had no problems because my fuel will only be 2 weeks old at most.

I have five cans and fill them every 10 days. I do not really want to switch to aspen because of the cost.

 

I was just wondering if it would make a difference to the running of the machines as they suggest it will.
