You can use a length of friction cord with a double fishermans on each end but the eyes keep everything tidy. my old one wich hade the double fishermans on the end was 55'' long without the knots. But some people like them long and other like them short. Hope this helps

I've got a 105cm length of the 10mm eye2eye ocean poly, generously donated by a fellow arbtalker. Whilst it's quite long, i've just put more wraps and braids in my VT. I like the extra security but it still glides quite fluidly over my xtc+.

Wouldn't bother with eyes as you're stuck with that length and can only adjust by adding wraps or braids. Get a good length of a friction cord you like, add 2 double fishermans and tie your hitch a bit long, and adjust the length until you have it the way you like it. When you're done, cut off excess undo fishermans and measure. Saves a bit of hassle when making up a new one.
