its that time of year again.....i have 2 musto and 2 helly hansen base layers which are both very good. Im looking for another 2 for the winter, has anyone tried any other brands?

 

What temperature range do you start wearing them in?

 

Below freezing? Or a bit higher?

higher mate....it doesnt get all that cold here, but i like to wear just a base layer and t-shirt most of the winter, tshirt alone is normally too cold, tshirt with sweater is too restrictive and hot

Patagonia all the way, pricey but last for ever, i have stuff that is 5-6 years old and is worn constantly in the winters.

I have a couple of Madshuss from Norway, Low alpine and HH. I think any that wick the moisture away from the body are the best. IME any snowboarding/skiing base layers will do the trick and to avoid paying through the nose check out TK MAX.

Usually get my baselayers from blacks , HH or what ever is doing a good deal. Usually get good discount as well. Tried gill to had it for 2 years not bad IMO on the cheaper end of the scale i think. HH very good too.

Just curious. I don't wear any layers.

 

Generally short sleeves under a non-down vest is about all I can handle in the temps just above freezing or I get overheated.

 

The wind tends to be the big factor for me.

 

There a plenty of sunny days when it's under freezing by a few degrees here, where a short sleeve shirt is fine mid-day, but if it's windy, a light sweatshirt really feels good to me.

 

So I'm sort of in reverse, adding top layers when needed.

smelly helly merino wool can't recommend it highly enough, also have a helly cool max type top which i'm wearing now which is good on typical british summer days (wet wild and cool but not cold) :w00t:it wicks the sweat away well on the odd hot day too.

Peter storm are ok and cheap as, cheaper than helly hansen. Or at least they were when i bought some last, they've lasted ages.

merino wool or a nike cycling top, the clingyness feels good!
