Reminds me of two I saw in Seattle at the Arboretum. They were suffering from Ground Compaction and were having their Root Zones Mulched.

Ground compaction is highly unlikely in this case.

Area has had very little traffic foot or mechanical if any near it in the last 90 years.

Interesting diagnoses I wont rule it out though

It looks to me like your Wellingtonia has Botryosphaeria dieback, which is why it has brown areas appearing across the tree. It is a fungus that effects many trees when they are under stress....Botryosphaeria fungi are typically opportunistic pathogens. Opportunistic pathogens only cause disease on plants that are stressed (frost, drought etc). Therefore, avoiding plant stress, which predisposes plant tissue to infection and colonization by this fungal group, is the best strategy to prevent Botryosphaeria disease problems. It is important to remember that under optimal growing conditions, trees and shrubs are typically able to resist infection and colonization by Botryosphaeria fungi. Basically, the tree needs lots of water, but obviously that is not so practical to arrange!

Looks just like a tree I've been monitoring for about six years. The foliage and pattern looks the same.

I was never able to establish exactly what the problem was but suspected lack of water then four years ago a house was built close by on the uphill side of the very gentle slope.

Two years after that the tree was stone dead.

My best guess now is that the tree was drought stressed when I was first consulted. The new house caused changes to the adjacent ground ie: root damage, ground compaction, changes in the water course.

That's all I can offer on this one.

Any body know what is wrong with this wellingtonia.

and any possible treatment ? any advice appreciated.

Gollum,

Did you try talking to him/her and ask him/her how he/she feels and what he/she thinks the problem is, like a sister of our queen teaches us to do  ?
