USA vacation advice

I'm hoping to be able to treat the Mrs to a holiday in the states early next year. First and foremost is about 5 or 6 days in New York but then I probably have another 6 to 8 days to kill. I had thought of San Francisco but would really like to see small town America. Any pointers appreciated. I definately don't want to do LA, Florida etc. I know it's not much time so I need to keep my options simple.

Cool, sounds good Ian,New york is cool,i reckon 6days would be too long.I was about 13/14 when i was there.Went to Chicago on another trip for a few days then across lake michigan to a small town that was really nice, cant remember the name, which was a week or so.San Fran looks pretty sweet place,Better to spend a shorter period of time than longer in a place i reckon,(more so in small town america..)

Oh and trip advisor is really helpfully too :thumbup1:

Had a look at trip advisor but got a bit lost with that and the other info available. If I can stay less in NY that's sweet as the hotel costs are expensive to say the least and I've been told to stay at the best places I can afford. Not knowing the US I just don't have a clue where to go. I just like the look of some of those quiet little unspoilt places as far away from the hustle and bustle as poss.

I stayed in NY for just one night then travelled. Can recommend Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky etc. There's no great wow factor as in Grand Canyon type thing but it's America at its nicest. Nice people, nice places and a lot of it is off the tourist track.

I absolutely hated New York when I was there, but im not a huge city person.

As for small town America.......you might be in for a surprise.

I think id stick to going to see the natural attractions if i were going

Any reason for hating New York Steve? I'm not a big city person either, in fact the further away from people I am usually the happier I am. NY is more for the wife than me. And the surprise regarding small town America? This is why I need the pointers. I don't want to spend a fortune on a holiday I would rather forget.

Auckland to Hawaii

Hawaii to Anchorage AK

Anchorage to Seattle

Seattle to San Fran (see the Redwoods)

San Fran to LA

LA Back to Auckland

There is bugger all point flying all the way over the Continental US just to visit a city I reckon. The idyllic small town America does exist, but you probably won't find it just off an interstate.
