Was working at Stanhope Castle today ringing some fallen limbs off the big beechs in the castle gardens, some of them were 3ft wide, after 4 hours of ringing up my ms 660 it snapped it,s crank and the clutch fell off:001_huh:and no the chain was not tight saw is a 2008 had one of the same year knock it,s big end out last year :confused1: anyone else had problems with 660 cranks? luckly i,ve got a spare crank to fit it:thumbup: so today could of been better, but working in Weardale is a joy

 

HI mate we have 2 660 06/08 how many hrs has your saw done mate are saw are good one with a 25ins bar and one 3ft heated handle thanks jon :thumbup:

 

it had done about 1500 hrs.

It seems strange to me how many of the older saws i.e. 066, 08 etc still seem to be around yet the newer 660 and 880s just don't seem to last.

 

I know people may say 'but my 660 has been fine for 8 years' but then it may have been rarely used in that 8 years.

 

I always sell my MS880s after a year/18 months or so as I can't handle the hassal... :sneaky2: Problems idling etc.

Very true. My first 088 (my first milling saw) was bought old and quite tatty off ebay, did hundreds of hours of milling (requiring only one trip to be repaired - carbs), started first time, every time and was sold earlier this year. My other 088 is cleaner, newer and doesn't idle as well. It also required a trip to the shop, though has done far fewer hours.

I think this part is made from a magnesium / aluminium alloy that is too weak to start with, but when fired in the stihl factory oven becomes strong enough to use in the saw engine etc. Interesting that you've had a couple of failures of this bit. I don't think I'd ever carry a spare crank with me! Glad you got it fixed.
