Below 20MPH (that the legal limit for most tractor) oil brakes and little or no suspension is OK.

 

Above 20MPH you need full suspension and air brakes on all wheels.

 

This is my understand from what I've been told over the years.

That was my understanding too and also the same as what i have managed to get off vosa but wasnt too sure about actual suspension type ie rocking beam axles etc or just straight sprung beam axles.

 

Also on a side note if anyone has a pair of artic trailer axles with brakes they want to get shot of i would be interested.

call by at your local john deere dealership. JD in the last 12 months have produced a very useful free booklet which will tell you all you need to know. Think it is called 'look behind you'. The front cover is of a JD towing a green Bailey trailer taken from the cab of the tractor looking into the wing mirror.

Think i'm right in saying you dont need air for use over 20mph, but you do need higher spec oil brakes on a 10, rather than 6 stud axle

when i bought my copy after a talk it was only £15 about 2 years ago

it covers every thing from drivers licence ,lights ,markers.drivers hours including tacos non agricultural use, waste regs etc.

if you can get a copy of this bible this man was a retired trafic police man who helped to train vosa officers and gave many lectures for local farming groups.

he was the top man in his field, who was at the end of the phone to help with any problems.

if he didnt know the answer he would find out and call you back

unfortunatly he died at christmas time. :thumbup1:
