Knee Pain

Got very uncomfortable pain in the knees when I climbed a mountain in Norway and I've had it in the Lake District too. Its just come about again this week as we are climbing in and out of a river(dyke) and yanking limbs out etc. Is this a common complaint in arb? I reckon spiking doesn't help but then there are people who have spiked for decades without problems.

i used to think it was shoulders that packed older climbers in, but it seems to be the knees(a more fragile joint, and is used alot more), not too long after i fixed my shoulder, my knees gave me trouble.

get on it now!!!! this goes for any injury. supplements are good for cartilidge and connective tissues, not a preventative. the most important thing is to build up the muscle around the joint. pain in the arse exercising, but effective. only if you could take a tablet instead. and yes it's the spikes. all that knee locking, and impact energy absorbtion

You need to find out what type of knee pain it is, is it rheumatoid ahritis/arhtritis or your ibial tibial band which is tendonitis?

 

I have ITB and found voltorol or deepheat gave relief, i also take supplements. I've also changed the boots i wear or had orthotics stuck in other boots/shoes

Very basic but worth doing/considering: stretch your thigh muscles, front and back, thoroughly, at least every evening after work, best if stretch am, too. If feeling generous towards yourself: make sure your legs are thoroughly stretched too.

 

Tight thighs & legs = hard on knees. The bend of knees is dependant upon supple muscles above & below. If the knee bends well it absorbs shock of impact.

p.s. inflammation is (generally) a response by the body to a cause.

Munkymadman and Zenfordinner (great name) have both suggested the strength and flexibility of the muscle around the joint and one without the other would be of limited use. Inflexible muscle will result in injury. The bigger the muscle the more difficult it is to build some flexibility into it.

Mountains will always make your knees hurt. particularly on the way down.

As already said knees are rubbish.
