Snakes in the chip

Needed to use some well-rotted chip today for mulching and came across these. Just hatched and lots more eggs. Had to carefully place eggs back in the warm part and cover up.

 

Should have been aware of snakes as many years ago a shopping mall used some of my chip in a wildlife exhibition along with plenty of grass snake eggs which hatched and caused pandemonium:biggrin:

Good to see Graham. I used to see a lot around here, but the buzzards have hit them hard. Rare to see one now.

I've only rarely seen an adult, let alone a hatchling.

Read something last year asking people in the countryside not to disturb their compost heaps untill later in the year because of grass snakes breeding.

i was muck spreading a few years back and roared into an old really rotten heap with thr loader, lifted up a grab full and the amount of snakes that were falling out of the load scared the **** out of me!! they were wriggling around like a fishermans bait box of worms!!!

Kinda looks like the yellow banded Ring neck racers here in the states with a White band?, perhaps the same family. Interesting reptiles and given the right degree of respect very helpful with the Ecology. The poisonous type are always a concern around these parts, better to have a live and let live attitude if possible.
