BS3998 2010- putting the specific into specification

I attended a great little lecture at the ISA arborcamp while at Justins event, it has raised a few alarm bells for me, overall i think its a great thing, but i am certain there will be many "teething issues" that will come to all our attentions pretty darn quickly, especially climbers who already have a difficult job.

 

I dont know how many of you own a copy? within the lecture audience it was about 10% who owned a copy!

 

now I havent read it and memorised it, (am about to over the next week/month) but I will as and when I come across issues with it divulge items that I think are going to be very important changes to our working lives.

 

In the meantime i STRONGLY advise anyone to get to one of the upcoming BS3998 lectures promoted by the AA and others, if you think it is not important, trust me, your going to regret it.

 

get ahead of the spec and wise up before you start wondering what the hell that consultant TO/LA is talking about when he is pulling you up left right and centre for contravention of the standards!

 

Arb work is about to get so tightly specified your feet wont touch the ground!

 

knowledge is power, wise up and make your life easier, or ignore it and find your life a darn site harder.

went to the one in wrexham on the 5th, very interesting in my opinion but unfortunately it is still used as a set of guidelines down for interpretation i.e. if you can "justify" doing work not to the BS recommendations and the justification has a reasonable cause then its ok to carry on and do it... pity that this will leave the door open for a lot of work thats not "recommended" but is "justifiable"...

 

I suppose its all about interpretation

 

The new recommendations though don't unfortunately have any specialised work in there as restoration pruning for example!

 

Also at our LA, don't think they even know a knew BS is out:confused1:

I could not agree with Tony more about attending one of the BS3998 seminars, i did and found it very interesting.

There are a few new things in it that could trip you up and they are worth knowing.

A copy of it is not cheap but its worth it in the long run, maybe chip in with 2 or 3 others and share the cost.

It didn't come across in my post but again i couldn't agree more, get to one of these seminars if you can, and the new BS is definately going to improve things over the next 10-20 years:thumbup:

Ha ha, this is so true! Although I agree with Tony that we should all get to know the new 3998 well, I wouldn't be too worried about being caught out by a TO - unless you are writing a tender document or something.
