been on a couple of the ABC response training courses and they are really involved in our industry, they have been to a couple of the past APF shows there way better than a normal first aid course i'm sure if you wanted to simulate any kind of accident they would be more than happy for you to set things up for a scenario.....

the arbaid is awesome and well worth the money, shame the gprs does not come with that price as that is a life saver its self....will invest in the near future...

anyone can make a cheap first aid kit up but Arb-Aid has its own unique stuff, and for what its worth its better than buying another green crappy one that just falls apart even though its never been open.

I got talking at length to the chap from ArbAid about their kits. My initial thoughts were that its an awful lot of money for a box of bandages and plasters.

 

Nope, there is nothing I can see in that kit that isn’t an over the counter product.

 

I didn’t suggest making a “cheap kit” but you can save money making your own and you can still save a life but saving a life comes down to what you know rather than what you own.

 

The arb aid kit is a good thing but, you can make your own just as good, my arb first aid kit is in a waterproof soft bag, I like it better than the pelli case (having tried both)

the gps locator could be given a miss for most though, unless there is no mobile signal etc, but then if there is no mobile signal then that should have been planned into the risk assessment and suitable measures taken. A climber i know Pete did a course in first aid with lots of severed limbs etc, sounded good, sick of hearing office types on my refreshers moan about tripping over bins and paper cuts. The kit sounds and looks like the proper deal, and could well save some ones life, and considering how harsh the serious injuries incured in tree work are then if not the kit in full...(cotton buds? saw dust in your ears??) but bandages etc, blood stoppers etc should definitely be included in any kit. - you just got to read some of the accidents reported on here to know all of this stuff is good, the kid who gashed his neck in the tree, hell he would be dead if all they had were a few plasters and a triangle bandage, a story where the grounds man went into shock and froze up and was thus useless - perhaps a days training having blood and limbs chucked at him might have prepared him a little, I think the current emergancy first response etc, which appears more to be dealing with your fat office based types dieing of heart attacks from too many mc d's.

Companies should rehearse emergancy rescues - an a company i worked for use to to do this, usally if it looked like we were on for an early finish, the opps manager would come up to the tree and say 'you've just cut your arm, blow on your whistle and after 2 minutes black out' it was a pain in the ass sometimes, but other times it was fun and prepared us for the moments where it was a real situation..... i wonder how many climbers have done a rescue climb since their cs38....... perhaps it should become a requirement to have the rescue climb reviewed every 3 years as well? or even less, make sure climbers are still familiar.

just a few points

1 first aid at work is every 3 yrs and now they recommend a yearly update and the last couple have made us pre pay to encourage attendance

2 it,s amazing what you can do with simple things if your a withit and practical guy

3 I have bought 1 kit even though we have generally 3 teams but we have bumped up the other kits with more suitable dressings ect

The main reason for buy one kit was a to see what we really thought and b for when we are away from the vehicle or off the beaten track.

Sods law says it will be a different team that possibly needs it but hopefully that team will have a better kit than it used to have and enough to surfice.

 

I honestly hope it sits in the van unused and is the biggest waste

but put it into perspective on how much you pay in fuel a month or new saws or gizmos and it aint too bad

It should be the customers paying and if over a year it is around £1 a day so over a few yrs less than a bag of peanuts.

 

I would even be happy to pay for a demo whether to the trainer or to charity
