the dreaded weed and feed was a subject discuused at the arborcamp seminars this weekend in fact. 50 odd miliona year is spent in the u.k on this product and its variants.

a tree growing in a lawn is to the weed and feed, a weed! it may not effect the tree to begin with, but the nock on effect of years of treatment can only go one way for trees in lawns or with roots into lawned areas.

Glynn percival gave some interesting insights into remediation of this kind of weed control poisoning of trees.

essentialy weed killers stop the photosynthetic capacity of trees, and reduces if not completley stops thier capacity to produce sugars, a sugar, yes a bag from tescos, its that simple, applied at a rate of 30-40 grams per litre with water will supplement the trees needs till the weedkiller is broken down.

very cool stuff.

i believe chemicals such as glyphosate and other generic herbicides aimed at perennial weeds contain chemicals that trees and other plants produce to grow such as auxins and gibberelins, in high concentrations found in the chemicals, it is harful to the tree, inhibiting growth and causing death to weeds, it wont be any good to the trees but they dont die as they have a larger area to spread out the chemical causing a lower concentration once it has spread throughout the organism.

id best mention this to my dad, he has been doing a lot of weed and feed recently!

For the use on any product reading and understanding the label and applying according to directions is and foremost key to any successful control of most anything. Alas since many people can not read and understand directions and refuse to learn we will have many more problems in the future. So much for the education system, whats left of it.

This isn't weed n feed AIUI

its designed for non crop areas and is quite new so no need to 2 sugars your lawn

lets hope they get it sorted as we are loosing horticultural chemicals

this may be good but may be bad- cazaron was a good friend:001_smile:

Thats very true

I'm interested in your sugar comment though- is this a recommended practice

I'm not saying - yes thats great we can use more chemical- it's just that some people want green weed free lawns AND trees.

We have also noticed that shallow rooted trees and shrubs are much more susceptible to herbicides- though not noticed any effect yet with roundup.

When applying residual herbicide to borders our general rule is use less where they live- this tends to tally with label guidance.

It's a long time since I was educated and I know a lot has changed in practices and recommends. I'm grateful for all the info. that I am picking up on this site. I know I will never know everything- thats 100% fact
