lagging was what we used on the 5 retorts we ran last year it was hung down the inside like curtains, about an inch thick and held on with pins, doors had a recess with rope in to act as a seal and after a few burns were really tight due to the tar, how thick is the metal in the oil tank?

To resurrect an older thread. Was any advancement made with anyones charcoal making? I hope to have ago this year whilst working in the woods. I plan on doing a bit of blacksmithing. Therefore would like to burn brash to cook charcoal. Retort style. I also plan on using an airline from compressor to a homemade old brakedrum forge.

I also have many other dreams yet to realise:001_rolleyes: I will post if I get that far.

Also are you still after barrels with lids Chris? If I come across any.

Holy thread revival Batman :thumbup1:

I'm OK for the mo thanks, I've not had chance to have another go for a year or so - though do want to have another go eventually.

oil barrels and a few of them would be just as easy as a transportable burn method, unless your after producing large volumes of charcoal.ive had good success with barrel burns in the past.

Thanks for the link. I get a heck of alot of useful info on arbtalk......yet I went to google first this time and spent hours looking at stuff that is no good to me:blushing:

Next time I will start in the search box here.:001_smile:

Yeah, agree. Arbtalk is such a great learning resource, I've learnt & still am learning loads. I'd also like to make charcoal on a budget.

Like that video... sounds like a rocket stove.

Cheers, Steve
