Keep it simple to start with.

16mm 50m rigging rope

ISC Block for the above

16mm split tail for the block

That will do everything you want up the tree unless you want to start getting in to redirects in which case more pulleys will be required.

For the ground, if funds permit you will need some form of lowering device, cheapest option being the ISC standard portawrap, then moving upwards you have the choice of the Stein portawrap or going further, a Stein bollard. from there its onwards and upwards as far as up to 2k for a grcs lowering device

You'll also need another split tail for attaching the portawrap to the tree, or in the case of the stein portawrap, 2 split tails

One correction to that Steve, whatever rigging rope you run you need to go up a size for the block attachment sling.

So 16mm line, 19mm sling, or 14mm line, 16mm sling.

The load on the block is double the load on the rigging line, so it must be stronger.

can you use a whoopie sling to attach the portawrap to the tree? whats the difference between using a whoopie sling or a split tail?

Cost.

Use old climbing rope if you want, anything will do but the nicer it is the more it costs.

Yes you can use a whoopie sling to attach the portawrap, but you will need a really long one if you plan to do any biggish trees.

I use a deadeye sling with a timber hitch, it only gets tied once for the whole job, so a whoopie sling is kind of wasted really.
