Black paint on lime avenue

Does anyone know the reason why the lime avenue at clumber park has "black paint" applied to the base of each tree..have had many theories over the years but never produced an accepted answer.

Guessing epicormic paint

don't think it works too well though and horrible to use

Records from 1906 relate that the trees were suffering from insect attack. To alleviate this, black grease bands were painted round the trunk of each tree to trap the insects, and are still visible today.

Two miles?!? That's incredible. If I ever venture up Norf then that will be well worth a visit.

 

I did initially think of the insect bands that you still get a lot on fruit trees, but then dismissed the idea.

Hi... we have a a row of lime trees at college and they have the grease band around them to prevent caterpiller's. the female climbs the tree on to the leaves and let off a pheromone, into the male climbs the tree only to get stuck on the grease band... shaun.

Hi Sburby, what's the species of caterpillars that the bands have been put in place for?
