Had a go at Cleft Chestnut Fencing

Wood doesnt alter in length on drying, it only moves/ shrinks across the grain. However, there is almost no movemet at all in cleft wood in this situation, as the natural stresses arent being messed with as they are when sawn, and the wood is staying wet being outdoors and in the ground.

I love this sort of fencing- it just seems to flow- so natural rather than all the standard cut timber featheredge etc.

Cutting your own to do the whole job also sounds just the ticket.

Did you price it up and take the time taken to make it into account- and did this mean the job worked out cheaper than bought in- or was it just the way you wanted to do it regardless?

i dunno how it was priced thats my boss's job, it may well have been day rate as it was all made on site while we were putting the fence up, we morticed them there with a chainsaw and made the rails fit ect.

the timber we used belongs to the estate where we were working, that was part of the job, they want to use as much of their own stuff as possible, which is nice
