Took down this decayed ash yesterday but the owner wants it all for firewood! I would love to see it milled and made into something more exciting than heat and smoke. Nevermind, you can't win them all.

Got some drying at the moment. It seems to split if at the ends quite badly. Smells sort of fruity when you cut it. Nice for the first cut then it's not very nice at all

Is there anything you can apply on the ends to stop it splitting?

 

I'm sure there is. I just left them unsealed. I use PVA i know there are better things out there but i've pva to work quite well.

Ash is fantastic timber. It is what got me into milling. I have not found it splits too much at all when sawn. Applying any sort of paint or PVA to the endgrain before milling always helps reduce splitting.
