Bowline

One of the most useful knots in tree surgery, applications as noted above plus: if you need to join two ropes which will have a very heavy load applied to them, use a bowline bend; (two bowlines joining each other by the loops) Sheet bends, even when doubled will slip and be a pain to untie. A bowline bend unties without the need for tools even when having been winched upon.

The bowline is probably one of the best knots out there, I've never had a hard time breaking the knot after heavy loading, and I've never seen one slip. I use it for almost all rigging applications, sometimes with an added half hitch. I use it for termination knots which I know I'll catch crap for it but like I said it never comes undone unless you want it to. also it can be tied easily with one hand after learning the technique. make a loop, pull a bite thru it, stick tail thru bite and dress knot.

Don't use it for climbing (I would if I needed to use the classic 3 knot system) but use the basic plus variations for winching/pulling/lifting etc. bowline, bowline on a bight, running bowline and a variation as a mid line knot that releases easier after a heavy load than the alpine butterfly.

Easy to tie and untie although for some bizarre reason I struggled with the running bowline for a while, no idea why :confused1:

The little rabbit comes out the hole round the back of the tree and back down his hole!

It's fast and easy to tie even when things are going wrong dosn't slip even with 8000 tonnes of ship yanking on it and is easy to undo. What's not to like about it? The first knot to learn after mastering your shoelaces.
