The mobile phone app that can identify a tree by its leaf | Leo Hickman | Environment | guardian.co.uk

Home | Leafsnap: An Electronic Field Guide

And it's free!!!:biggrin:but it might be too american-centric... just downloading now off the apple app store

Cheers for the tip off mate, unfortunately I don't have any trees in my gardern and just found a scrupled up oak leaf in my kit bag but the app didn't pick it up, can't wait to try it out on a fresh leaf though!

Cheers ciaran glyde

Just tried using this app, looks really go and thought I would give it a go. Well, have spent the last 30 mins waiting for the image of leaf to be uploaded and got fed up with it! I'm at home and the iphone is linked to my wireless and still never made it up.

The other thing that's not that user-friendly is you need to take the photo on a white background which in principal is fine but not so when you are wet and in the woods! Great idea and hope it improves...

Same problem here! Spent 20mins trying to upload and it just popped up with a message saying 'unable to upload'.

Hope it starts working soon so we can see the real potential and accuracy.

Or you could just use the 20mins looking at a field guide:001_smile:

if you cant identify a tree to genus in 3 seconds then this app may be of use.

if you know genus a book should give you an easy and quick completion of the identification.

when they do a gps location and mapping programme that is survey friendly for the I phone I will buy one.

I found it interesting that they show the "fruit" of our Enlish oak as a gall, rather than an acorn.

(just to prove I have actually looked through it )
