What is the process for getting spores from these old fruit bodies?

Wash them from the gills with a little bit of water and let the droplets with the spores drip and then dry on a piece of glass, so you can put either a white or a dark gray piece of paper underneath the glass to determine the colour of the spores.

If you want to be sure which species it is, you'll need a microscope to look at and measure the spores.

I have a microscope. I have just never tried getting spores from old fungi. Looking forward to giving it a go.

In that case, you can scrape the spores directly from the surface of the gills, put them on your object glass in a drop of water or a colouring medium and measure them with 1000 x magnification.

Where the mycelium of K. deusta is stopped by the tree at the edge of sound wood, the black lines are tree based defensive barrier formations (compartmentalisation).

Here's a good example of this phenomenon (photo 3, 4 and 6).

Bit late to contribute: but for what its worth; I come across Antrodia ( usually A. serialis ) in processed structural timber. Your photos look like a dead ringer Tony. One thing I would add is that its associated with warm, very humid environments

Thanks Pete, didnt spot this post before:thumbup1:

Thanks Gerrit, Matt has got some cracking shots there, so are we suggesting that trees can compartmentalise K deusta? I was under the impression it was fairly invasive?
