It’s not at all uncommon to find street trees with little or no roots under the tarmac. The kerb and haunching can go down 500mm or more which either severs existing roots or disrupts the radial pattern in new plantings. The one in your pictures looks to be a respectable bit of civil engineering.

 

Under the tarmac also has less moisture and poor gaseous exchange so not a favourable environment for roots.

 

Shame to lose the tree but on the up side…..firewoodtastic

yeah i think the volcanic soil must have something to do with it, the ones that fall over are all planted on ancient calderas. sometimes its really clay like so i imagine the compaction from people (these are very popular parks) gets pretty bad.

Same problem down here, especially around Taumarunui. Pumice gets washed away really easily and undermining occurs where trees are anywhere near a water run off. The water will usually scour away under the roots (which never seem to form properly either) and then over she goes. Everytime it rains down here there's slips and trees over.
