Hobbs or GRCS

Apart from expense what are the pros and cons of each? I do like both but both have little faults!

 

What do you think and why?

grcs all the way although i've not had a play with the new srw.

the hob was desgined when we understood a lot less about the maths involved in rigging, so it is really strong and can handle big ropes, you can cool it when your doing long lowers, prity bomb prof, but i dont need/want to take really big bits that thay cant handle on the ground or reduce the cicles of my ropes, smarter not harder and the lifting is so much better

Craig, what's the GRCS like with 16mm rope, I think it prefers 14mm?

 

I know the Hobbs is fine with 16 or 19mm.

the grcs is fine with a 16mm and will take up to a 19mm, but as you say it happer with the smaller ropes, which are also easer to handle.

Grcs. I was also torn between the 2 but only really liked the hobbs because of price. With the Grcs wincing capabilities you will end up finding more uses for it than standard rigging. I would invest in the visor though and get them to throw in some extra rubber mounts as it will move if you work it hard. On really big lumps you also have the bollard which gives you more control than the winch does.

The Hobbs is a heavy old lump but it does wonders for big bits of wood, I'd love to have a good go with the grcs as I think the ease of winching is preferable to the two man effort required on the hobbs.

I got a Hobbs. One of the main reasons was I do a bit of subbing and thought it was simpler for the simple folk I work with. Honey brothers did it at a great price as well.

Better to check Harken's spec's. I'm pretty sure that the winch feature isnt designed for ropes over 14. A 16 can be used and a rougher covered lowering rope like the orrible marlow braid actually winches quite well.

What does it say then? Sure I have seen it somewhere that ropes up to 3/4". Further research I think!
