Couldn't give a toss about the thread subject but mildly apoplectic to see someone, particularly a moderator nigh on flaming someone here ???:confused1::confused1:

I assume direct sarcasm is banned; pc site and all that.

Just for good measure - voting NO to AV on voting day!

I think "crown clean" is a very descriptive term, when I use it in a quote I tend to use a brief explanation, as I would with any term that the gen public would not necessarily understand. Is it right or wrong to use it? I dont care. I do think and believe that arb in general is getting too far up its own backside, too high and mighty. At the end of the day, we go out, cut a bit off a tree and go home. Its not that technical, why over-complicate things things just to justify a over-inflated price and ego. If we're not careful we'll be charging soon for not doing anything to the trees, leaving ivy, deadwood, snags, etc hardly what the clients will want.

I do specify all of the above, its called crown cleaning. The last thing the industry needs is the arbor ecologists dictating how we specify our work.

The majority of arborists work on trees that are grown in an artificial environment. Explain why crown cleaning is bad for a tree if the tree is grown in an artificial environment ie a town or city?

The removal of the term crown cleaning is good for the arbor ecologists with their excessively enthusiastic quest for creating habitat for invertibrates, fungi and bats on every last tree in Britain regardless of the situation or wether the tree grows in a city, town or a rural woodland. The retainment of deadwood where applicable should've been a footnote at best....an add-on to the description of crown cleaning.

I suspect most working arborists will feel the removal of the term crown cleaning from BS3998 is a step backwards for the UK arb industry. Why not remove the term, 'crown reduction'? one of the most pointless things that can be done to a tree.

the fact you show such disdain for both arbor ecology and reduction tells me that you do not understand trees nor their importance to the flora and fauna of their habitats.

Oh and if you find this comment distastefull tough cos you just slagged off the two most important principals in my business. and arb you aint.:sneaky2:

I'd be interested to see you back that up with examples when you've calmed down.

For the guys who have not risen to the greatness that is writing your own specs, a specific description is ideal as it leaves no room for error, or far less. Assumption can get you in bother and it can also be used as a weapon against you if a 3rd party isnt happy. If someone is to blame, the paperwork will point the finger:thumbup1:
