No Notch = No Direction

Dont see any problem with step cuts you can pretty much get all the direction you want and with a tag line its fool proof..

that was the point of the showing the video....the tagline did not help with the control of the direction - look at it again.

Many people seem to think its the rope that controls the direction when its actually the notch and thickness of the hinge, they pulled that piece of timber off and the two sides of the step met and it swivelled along the curve and ripped to the right by some distance...ah whatever, if you cant comprehend that then forget it.

Thanks to the people who understood.

if you dont respect and value the notch then your no better than the moronic cretin with a rusty transit panel van, wobbly ladders and his cherished 5 mm polyprop blue rope from the bargain bin at B&Q.

we discuss tree work here too mani, its comments like the above we dont like, and i think you'll find the sentiment the same over at treebuzz

thanks

I wouldnt use a deep step cut,it would be the same depth as a notch...and i would not use a notch either.

We recently rigged out a large corsican thats stem was one foot away from a wall and right over a roof.we rigged out 5ft by 3ft sections right over the ROOF and no problems and worries at all....setting up notches would of been a waste of time effort and could of resulted in a largish gob wich could have the opertunity of going through the roof ,windows or flying off any where if it caught the chain wrong.

Look at my avatar seems to be going spot on where i wanted it and thats not notched.

That rusty transit post was in response to this post made by that rupe guy -

Step cut does it for me unless we are into proper big stuff with nuclear reactors etc underneath!

He was taking the p*ss big style, I thought if I said what i did about the rusty transit I could get some more intelligent words from the man, thats all, whats wrong with that? Anyway his avatar pic is annoying.

Take a chill pill Mani. There were alot of mistakes made in that clip at the end of it, and everone has come to that conclusion. The thread has lost its way, by getting personal about other members.

I dont know you, you dont me, i dont have any right slagging you off and your work / experience. Just bear that in mind. :001_smile:

yes your right, they're so hard to do.

and could of resulted in a largish gob wich could have the opertunity of going through the roof ,windows or flying off any where if it caught the chain wrong.

you dont need a massive gob thats gonna destroy roofs like a wrecking ball. just enough to seize control of the timber with a good hinge.

I use step cuts as well, just not when i'm rigging out big pieces of timber like in gunter's video.

I'm aware that you can push off smaller /mid sized pieces accuratley like that guy reg said above but to make a deep step cut like gunter did was cr*p and it the way it veered to the right despite the tagline highlighted the importance of directional notches in rigging operations.

Ive had 2" gobs go flying off and brake green houses and tiles, i also have a nice large crack in my trusty rusty transit windsreen courtisy of a 2" gob.

Maybe your right about old gunter... on a bit that thin i maybe would of gobbed it...he must of had a lot of trust in the tag line guy if he got a wobble on with out him it could of cracked off the step and gone back words, but it didnt because it was tagged lined i dont think pin point accuracy was his concern though it pretty much went where he wanted.
