Whippendell woods are home to a great many veteran trees, beeches and oaks mainly, but scattered are many very fine sweet chestnuts, some of which are true ancients. i will be recording many of these over the coming months a big project and estimate at least a couple of thousand trees to add to the veteran tree list for the U.K maybe 10,000 time will tell. LOTS of time!

 

Many of these trees are home to bats, yesterday I saw frittilary butterflies and a fruit body of laetiporus full of pleasing fungus beetles. This wood is about to be documented in a serious and thorough way.
