Climbing VS Access platform

Hi everyone

 

I have been on AA risk assement course today. A big issue i was putting across was climbing was faster, better ,cheaper,more enjoyable and the right way to do tree work. Unless the tree was dead or dangerous to climb. However the fellow Arborists was mainly going for the platform. In my eyes its for people who can t climb or being lazy.

 

I wondered what your thoughts are on this?

If you look at the accident stats there are far more accidents involving mewps than rope access. Especially if you exclude chainsaw injuries and just look at falls. Unless there is a catastrophic tree failiure a climber who is climbing according to best practise is extremely, and I mean extremely, unlikely to have a fall.

Both have their place. A good MEWP can make reductions far easier as you can swing out and have a look at what you are doing. Great for street trees or areas where you can get a number of trees from the one spot.

 

Climbing is more enjoyable, and fills the gap for jobs where you could never justify the cost of a MEWP.

I would off said the same at ur age...but now im 30 running 2 businesses have a baby, wife, and house to look after i work from 6am to 8ish. Where as i agree i do feel safer in the tree but i simply dont have the energy to climb every tree any more.

mewp for take downs, light reductions,high hedges. climbing for work within crown, line clearance, and non accessable stuff. there will always be loads to climb and its more enjoyable if you dont have to climb every day (or maybe thats just me)

Here my token towards the debate i have been 18m up a redwood when the the solinoid jammed causing the the mewp to jack it's self off the deck by at least 60cm lots of screaming from ground crew and me anchoring in to the tree very very quickly

 

I am not a big fan of mewps and there are way to many accidents involving these bits of kit but thay do have there place in this industry we have them for lifting saves huge amounts of time
