Rob..well it was probably less noisy than a 2 stoke engine, so maybe no ear protection necessary; speeds of moving parts would be a good deal lower than on chain saws , so maybe flying particles not so hazardous; and of course don’t forget ...both the bowler and top hat were both developed as head protectors
