So you're bucking the trend of Brexit and leaving Europe?

A quick question, do you have any knowledge on the longevity of the birch pollards. Near enough every one I've ever climbed has been decayed and falling apart. Looking at the photo's, there's going to be some pretty large wounds some time in the future. Do you think yours are 'out of cycle' or are they allowed to get that large a diameter normally?

The Basque where I took the images has a very different growing environment for trees compared to most of the UK.

Whereas the ones that Van Gogh painted were from nuenen in Holland where the climate is more similar to the UK.

The comparable tree species in the basque region (birch, beech, oak, hazel and field maple) are quicker growing over there than here and are apparantly more hydrated.

This seems to make them more tolerant to decay from what I witnessed.

Having said that, the birch in the images were apparantly out of cycle, they probably would have been cut younger than they were left.

'The Sisters' - Elms at Terling

Painted by David Rolt in 1954, probably sold from one of his exhibitions at the Hazlitt gallery.
