Sprouts do not look freakish from here. And Tony yes if you raise the question then perhaps answering it would be kind. The tree in your pic looks what could be termed a midstem bottle-butt, rather intriguing from here....

And there was me thinking it obvious.:biggrin:

 

decay, cavitation in heart wood, shear crack formed, compensatory growth to close crack, crack extending, battle being lost.

Got a largish Ash with Ganoderma australe sprouting from the base. There was one bracket which is attached to a large root but has since died. It now has atleast 4 brackets of varying sizes appearing at the base on both sides. I wouldn't be overly concerned but the brackets are growing below a tight forked union with canker as well. The crown is full and healthy with very little deadwood. Other than monitor it what would the more expierienced gents suggest for this tree?

I want to say that it had something wrapped around it but then it's niggling at me that it's something else. Unsure of the history of the site.
