a group purchase would appeal to me, it would mean more hands and resources to manage/visit/protect the investment, an annual BBQ get together work party might even become the social event of the year!

other income streams, allowing training on site? for a small fee, managed holistic and for the benifit of wildlife we could have a twitchers members group, sell fungi produced on site to local specialist caterers, even producenative bulbs like the wood anemone

I love the idea. I'm not in a pension type position yet but I really like the idea. Having someone on/near site for doing guided walks, educating school kids or whatever would seem a good idea I think :)

Good idea. Get some xmas tree's planted along side your woodlands for a regular source of income. We started off with 70 acres and now we are upto 250 acres @ 2000 trees per acre. We did this after foot and mouth wiped out all our sheep and cattle.

i think there are more financially rewarding options than xmas trees, surely?

Without discussing our figures and finances on an open forum id like to say we do very well out of it. I am not suggesting that you or whoever it may be just plants xmas trees but it is definately another option/ income source to consider. It is a guarunteed source of income after the first crop is mature, providing you rotate your fields. Plus its safe... Christmas is not going to go out of fashion.

At college we have been taught that Christmas trees are one of the best things you can grow in terms of income/work ratio.

Am I right in thinking you work on a 7 year rotation Big Fell?
