Stihl chain oil filler caps

I've noticed on a couple of Stihl saws that I've used, that the chain oil filler cap won't go back into place. Sometimes it sits in the right position but the top won't turn and sometimes it turns but then just falls out of the hole. I was using my grandad's little MS171 just to chop up some branches and it took me about 20 mins to get it back on!

Anyone experienced this/got any advice?

There have been a few threads on this but I think the answer is, make sure you have the little notch lined up, make sure the oil isnt over filled(although the newest caps have a little hole so they dont hydraulic and not push in) make sure the bit you twist hasnt moved a bit before you try to fit the cap, clean up any crap around where the cap sits, and push down on the cap as you turn it(probably the most important bit IMO)

Tbh you are probably best PMing one of the members called Skyhuck(you can find him from the member list right at the very bottom of the page) as he can probably give you a few pointers.:thumbup1:

This has been discussed at length in this thread: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/13520-new-type-stihl-oil-caps-7.html#post262287

In the linked post, Stihl has formally acknowledged that they have a problem with the bayonet-style oil caps

im not a big fan either

you can buy the rubber/plastic old style ones for a couple of quid

but if you get oil on your hands or on the caps and dont have a flathead combi around they can be really annoying too

generally a bit better though i think
