Evening people,

I wanting to do my CS32 but I have recently heard that NPTC do not do the large felling certificate now because of the lack of size of trees which is accredited to the certificate, so now they are saying CS31 is small like it is and then CS32 is the medium but they wont run the large felling and the CS32 will be any size tree you can find, have I been told correctly or should i look into it more?

1 more thing how hard is the CS32 exam to the CS31?

cheers guys

I did both cs32 and 33 in 2008, at the age of 17, oh how fun that was!

32 includes use of a winch, whether its to recover a hung up tree or for rolling it whilst snedding. You will demonstrate the two stage backcut as the tree will be larger than your bar (15"). They are the largest differences.

large trees, cs33, it was large when i did it, now its specialist tree felling. i did the assessment on medium, they were still not that big! they only just came under medium when i did them. On large you will still do the two stage back cut, but before that you will have to bore into the hinge to take out the material in the centre of the tree, then the back cut will overlap this cut. i was bricking it when i did that the first time. but we had the same problem of finding suitable trees, as anything large enough tended to be protected in some way!

check the NPTC website for the specifics on the assessment.

you are correct there is no upper limit on the cs32 unit at the moment.

at least one tree must be over 22 inches for the assessment.

boring through the sink is part of cs32,

NPTC are revising cs33 in 2012.

Hope this helps,

I have plenty of trees suitable for cs32 if you are interested

CS32 is very different to CS31.

Not just are the trees bigger but you need to be a lot more confident in your cuts, positioning and just general use of a saw. You have to use a winch to get the trees down if you hang them up and in some cases role the timber on the floor. Oh and a medium tree dogs tooth is fun.

As for large tree felling it may be comming back. Check out the NPTC website for info and the FCA. Not sure if specialist felling is going away or it will become CS49 or something again if 33 come back.

I learnt all my large tree cuts on my CS32 anyway. Most of the time you will get a big saw out for the big trees anyway.
