I live in Newfoundland and i remember my father talking about guys who went to UK to log for the war effort. i remember seeing a couple of grave markers in our local cemetary saying that they were in the foresty units during the war.

During WW2 there were Canadian loggers based in Breamar, they were felling in an area called Mar Estate, now called Mar Lodge Estate, and they left an area of uncut tees in the shape of a Maple Leaf, (still visible on Google maps).

This was also the site of a early scottish ski resort, 1962, which failed due to bad luck with scottish winters.

I stayed recently in Drumnadrochit and my hosts were telling me about Canadians logging the surrounding plantations in the war.  It seems they got about.  I wonder just how many there were.

IIRC they built a narrow gauge railway to Beauly, to get the timber to the mainline. (not from Drumnadrochit, somewhere closer)

Ps great thread resurrection, wee Jim hasn't even been on the forum in 3 yrs
