Hi all

i was wondering if it was a good idea to ask local tree surgeons if they would consider dropping of lenghs of trunks so that i could cut and split them my self for firewood, during the summer when they are busy, i am willing to pay a fair price for freshly cut wood, i live in Chorley Lancashire, just for my personal use only. thanks in advance.

You might not get much in lengths, tree surgery is all about awkward rings and knotty bits! If it were in lengths, and loaded on a vehicle equipped to carry lengths then the tree surgeon has already got a pretty good idea about what he is doing with it all!

If I was given the same offer, I would be dropping you off a lot of chestnut and poplar!!

Aftger I've taken my share ( a truck load) I leave the rest of any firewood for the locals. I have one guy in particular who is on an invalids benefit looking after his elderly mother. His wood fire runs pretty much 24/7 so he is always after wood. He'd been burning Poplar and Willow and saw me working on the side of the rod and asked if he could have some wood. Since then I call him in advance, he comes out with his saw once the job is done and takes as much wood as he likes and then rakes and sweeps up after, including anything I leave. He's happy as larry because now he gets as much good wood as he can take, no charge, and it suits me because he does a hell of a good job with the clean up. Just ask, you might get some freebies.

It would help if you were in a position to offer something in return - anything; some people have free range poultry so barter with eggs, you may be a mechanic and be able to do a small something for them - anything. My local pub keeps its fire raging with free good firewood because a tree surgeon keeps a generous slate there.
