Ok, I'm coming round to the fact that maybe I need a spider of some sort - more effiecient, safer, and possible hire market = more money.

I rekon 18 m height about right but I want max out reach for max crown 'penetration' (ooooo!). Can any owners advise as to the best and most affordable on the market?

Nooooooo.............dont do it!!!! MEWPS are really cheap to hire here in essex, if there is a tree that is too dangerous to climb i hire the right MEWP for the right situation, still prefer the good old 13mm of rope all the way!!

If I had the money i'd have a new nissan cabstar with 21m platform, yep and i'd only do roadside trees, infact if we didn't have the credit cruch I'd have bought a 27m 7.5 ton platform by now

O, not a good reaction.

I've been the first one to say 'noooo' climbing's the way forward and you can't do a great re-shape and reduction with one especially with access that we're used to round this neck of the woods, but for road side work and hire out potential???
