lunch breaks and the law?

You may well be right, I've never had an office job. I was pretty sure shop floor staff have paid break i.e. the hour is within their 8 hrs, whereas wharehouse staff and manual labour such as us lot usually have to have any breaks in addition to the 8 hrs worked.

I assumed office was the same as shop floor, but dont know for sure. MAybe it just depneds on the employer and the contract they use. If staff sign a contract that give them a poor deal then its a choice they have to make.

well, cheers for the info everyone! I will try and bear all this in mind, I don't really mind stopping for half an hour or so I just don't usually stop for that long while working on my own. Tend to take more frequent shorter breaks, every time refuel have a drink and five minutes rather than a designated break in the morning and at lunch.

I don't get paid for lunch breaks either and offically should have 30 mins (unpaid) for lunch each day. Not that we always get a break, in the summer we are full on with little old ladies complaining about light/leaves/conkers/squierrles/etc to get a break. If I'm out of the office (3-5 days a week) it will be a snack in the car between visits. The one benefit our office has is flexi time, so long as the job is done and to a good standard then the management are cool if one day we do 5 hours while another may be a 10 hour affair. I can also be in the office anytime between 0700-0930 too which is handy if I need to do the school run or have a hangover!
