I'm undecided regarding winch purchase

Due to the dearth of second hand winches (my excuse) I will probably hafta buy new.(plus VAT )

4 or 5 tonne, and could just be tempted by the electro hydraulic remote control.

So

(i) either a Farmi (NI dealer, pile em high & sell em cheap?)

(ii)Or a Kerpen? (also available locally)

(iii)Or a Uniforest from Riko

(iv)Or an Ingland

Any odds?, other than price that is.

Plus

What do I need?, I am dealing with 30 year old Sitka & Lodgepole, no big stuff.

Decisions decisions.

Bigger is better but really you won't need more than 5 tonnes for that. Consider getting a double drum if you'll be doing a lot of winching. Igland are the Rolls Royce of winches but if you get the price list from Wilson make sure your sitting down when you open it! It was 14K for a 9tonne double drum!

For cost/performance ratio i'd go for a uniforest. Have a chainsaw holder and lots of bits to hold kit, also a chainbox too. Electrohydraulic is great, power assisted rope out is great especially when you have 60m of cable to drag out.

Yes I was aware of the Igland quality/pricing.( and Posch stuff too:001_smile:)

But for me is hobbyweekend use only (which is why I had been looking 2nd hand)

The Uniforest does indeed look to be a strong contender, though I would kinda like to deal with the local Kerpen agent. Since I have tormented him for long enough

There does however appear to be quite a disparity in the remote control version pricing between the Uniforest & the Kerpen.

Which probably swings it for the Uniforest.

Am off next week so will have to decide then.

Thanks Brushcutter.

Cheers

M

jph,

not selling (yet), due to extracting from rank moss with an ag tractor, I need to stay out of it when wet, I saw the hash made when a neighbour on adjacent ground clearfelled and got the timber extraxted by 8 wheel drive forwarders.

Therefore until I have sufficient timber extracted to "buffer" me through I will not commit to selling/establishing a firewood round.

Der system would not let me Edit my last post....10 minute rule kicked in

I type tooooooo slow

If its really wet make sure you get a good brash mat down. It's probally stating the obvious to you but it really makes the difference. I did some forwarding for a member on here who clearfelled a small block of Norway. Sold all of that for sawlogs, fencing and chip wood. I felled about 15t on Norway on Saturday thats going for firewood.
